MY CAMPUS LIFE
After being admitted to the course I
wanted most and probably my first choice when I was applying that is Bachelor
of records and archives management, I could not imagine myself at Makerere
University since it happened to be my dream from childhood. Luck is not for
everyone so I was among those few that the last time I picked my provision
letter was the last day of serving them peacefully due to the fact that strikes
of the non-teaching staff started the following day. The strike was so serious
that it took some long time to stop probably a month and this led to the
excitation of the real date the semester was supposed to begin further than
planned till issues that led to the strike were solved.
As soon as the strike was cooled down
than the university opened up for the 2016/2017 academic year intakes and as a
tradition at Makerere university, the first week is always for fresher’s
orientation where we were introduced to the new environment of the university,
orientation was conducted in key faculties of someone’s course where I spent
the whole day suffering looking for my faculty and I could not tress it till
the next day when someone helped me out because nothing showed that it was the
college of computing and information science so after seeing it, I was more
pissed because it was among the colleges I had bypassed the day before and then
other important aspects of life at the university of course not forgetting the
best bazaar organized around campus where most things are sold cheaply helping
campusers to save some money they would otherwise have used for transport to go out and buy what they want
as well as well as coming back because sometimes transport was free of charge
to our hostel once you bought in bulk from bazaar. This also gave me a lot of
fun when I had just joined campus because it was even more interesting when it
came to night time due to the fact that they would play for us lots of music
which helped me to meet lots of new friends who are now beneficial. However
things were not so straight to the point from the beginning due to the fact
that the admission lists delayed to come out, the semester also delayed to
begin due to strikes and though it begun, it was a cohisident that some
lecturers were not attending to us for almost like two weeks which was even
more worse to the students attending the evening programme because for them
most lecturers were not attending to them for almost a month which led to
another strike. This seemed not so serious but the abrupt attacking of the day
students at ten in the morning and chasing them out of their lecture rooms and
the faculties as well with big sticks proved how serious they were.
This happened at my college, The
College of Computing and Information Science on a Wednesday fourteenth of
September where we were attending to Madam Nina’s lecture of Paleography and
Oral History Management. She had grouped us and different groups had different
questions to discuss because after we were supposed to present what we had
discussed to our fellow students so as we were seated in our groups, we had
some noise outside but we remained confidently seated due to the fact that the
lecturer was inside and she had told us to remain calm because strikes always
happen at Makerere university despite the fact that we were seeing others
rushing to go out of the building just like you can hear fire alarms in the
building and you remain seated but honestly speaking to my side it was not the
same issue because my heart was already pumping reflecting what my elder
brother had jazzed me about the strikes at Makerere university so I was just on
set to just run out so as I was seated
next to the door way where our group was, I was just looking outside all the
time as well as praying to God to save me from any terrible condition that
would happen to me and as I turned my head to see outside I saw students
carrying big sticks coming towards the door where I was seated so I just run
and went out through the exit of our
lecturer room. To be honest, by the time those cases of stepping on each other,
knocking chairs, pushing at the door way as a result of panicking to go out
came in me and my groupments we were already out of the building just watching
them because we were the first to run before situations would become worse so
ever one got her way back home and coming back to campus was Friday when
everything was settled meaning lecturers were now delivering their services to
the evening programmed students.
As the saying goes that a bad
beginning makes a good ending, Makerere University is now settled and
everything is delivery in time the way it is supposed to be making as proud as
students of the university despite the fact that course work is plying up each
day that comes, we as students we are doing what it takes to and submit it in
time due to serious discussions we conduct. On the other hand, it was not so
easy the day I presented because it was our first time at campus and we were
not given enough time because the day we had started discussing, is when the
evening students striked so we got only three days to finalize with every that
is discussing, typing, printing and then presenting to those new pretty faces
but again we did our best which even strengthened our confidence meaning that
by the time we leave campus, we shall be true Managers. Considering the other
part of life, the University makes everyone comfortable through its programs
that can make one gain hope for example fellowship at lunch time hour as well
as having those professionals in charge of guidance and counseling concerning
any issue that is making you un comfortable meaning that when am loosing hope I
just attend the fellowship for relief not forgetting musicians and Djs who come
at campus to release us from the stress of academics hence helping us to
refresh our brains.
Returning to my course Bachelor of
Records and Archives Management containing six course units with some like;
Paleography and Oral History Management which requires a lot of reading
perphrates, books and research although the lecturer has played a big role of
grouping us such that if you cannot read atleast you can understand from
discussions and presentations then the other is Information Technology that required
all of us to create an account with MUELE and this disturbed us a lot mainly
the passwords that even though it so well and you log in, it would first tell
you that the password is wrong or sometimes bringing for you some other pass
word when you click on remember password and when you would try to login with
that , it would still refuse so just imagine such when you are having course
work to submit before that day ends and this happened to me I was about to cry
but I got a savior who helped out. Since then I have never gotten that problem
again and I think I will also help fresher’s who are coming next year with such
a problem because for as long as your done with that problem of passwords
enrolling our self for our courses is not hard as long as you know the course
cords therefore below is the table of my course cords, name, number and their

Besides having a sounding name that
our college is for computing, it also has a lot of problems due to the fact
that it’s where more thieves are gazetted because they expect a lot from our
bags so if you are not careful, you might end up crying like one of my friend
whose tabulate was stolen and yes its indeed true that we have computer
laboratories but some computers do not work as well as the sockets in the
building where may be students can charge their laptops so in general most
things are now going on well at campus apart from those few mentioned that need
to be worked upon for example Security
on a serious note at the college of computing and information science then
others will become fine as time goes on, Thank you.
